The total cost of importing a used car from Japan includes the vehicle purchase price, Japan-side charges, international shipping, applicable import duties and taxes, and the costs of clearance and delivery at the destination.
There is no single worldwide import price. Even when the vehicle costs the same in Japan, the final amount can differ substantially between destination countries.
Compare the total landed cost—not just the price advertised in Japan.
First, know which price you are comparing
A vehicle's auction price, an FOB quotation and a CIF quotation do not cover the same costs. Before comparing offers, identify what each price actually includes.
Vehicle or auction price
The amount paid for the car itself. Auction fees, purchasing services, inland transport and export costs may still need to be added.
FOB, CFR or CIF quotation
A price based on an agreed trade term and named port. Its scope of freight, insurance and responsibility must be checked against the actual agreement.
Total landed and delivery cost
The full budget after adding all applicable purchasing, transport, customs, compliance, registration and agreed final-delivery charges.
What do FOB, CFR and CIF actually include?
| Trade term | Seller's key obligation | What the buyer must check |
|---|---|---|
| FOB | Deliver the goods on board the nominated vessel at the named port of shipment, including applicable export clearance. | Main carriage, insurance, import charges and destination arrangements. |
| CFR / C&F | Arrange and pay freight to the named destination port. | Insurance, import clearance, taxes and relevant destination charges. |
| CIF | Arrange and pay freight plus the insurance cover required by the CIF rule. | Insurance scope, import clearance, taxes and charges after arrival. |
Under Incoterms® 2020, FOB, CFR and CIF are maritime trade rules. In each case, risk normally transfers when the goods are on board the vessel at the port of shipment, even where the seller pays freight to the destination port.
For the detailed allocation of obligations, see the ICC guidance on FOB and ICC guidance on CFR and CIF.
Two quotations are comparable only when they cover the same vehicle and the same cost scope. A lower FOB amount is not necessarily cheaper than a higher CIF amount.
What makes up the Japan-side cost?
The purchase price is only the starting point. Depending on how the car is sourced and prepared, additional Japan-side charges may apply.
Not every transaction is billed in the same way. Some charges may already be included in the quotation, while others may be charged separately.
When sourcing a car through a Japanese auction, the Super5 Auto purchase process provides the framework for coordinating vehicle requirements, purchasing, Japan-side transport and export arrangements.
Japan Customs also requires appropriate used-vehicle export documentation based on registration status. The required certificate and export declaration procedures should be confirmed before shipment.

Why can shipping costs differ so much?
Shipping is not a fixed surcharge applied to every Japanese used car. The quotation depends on the route and the vehicle being transported.
RoRo can suit vehicles that meet the carrier's driving and handling requirements. Container shipping may be considered where different cargo arrangements, multiple vehicles or particular handling requirements apply.
Neither method should automatically be assumed cheaper. Compare actual quotations for the same vehicle, destination and included services. See the Super5 Auto vehicle shipping service for available transport arrangements.
Costs that buyers often miss after arrival
A vehicle price plus ocean freight is not necessarily the amount required to collect and register the car at its destination.
Additional costs may include:
- Import duties and applicable local taxes
- Destination port handling and release charges
- Customs clearance and related services
- Required vehicle inspection or compliance work
- Registration and licensing
- Inland delivery to the final location
The tax calculation may depend on the destination country's rules for vehicle age, engine size, category, customs value or other applicable factors. A single global tax percentage is therefore unreliable.
Unexpected storage, port delays or additional document requirements can also generate costs. The amount and responsibility depend on the specific circumstances.
A CIF quotation does not mean the car is cleared, registered and ready to drive. Confirm destination-side requirements and charges separately with the relevant local authorities or service provider.
How to compare two vehicle quotations fairly
Suppose one seller quotes FOB and another quotes CIF. Their amounts cannot be compared directly because they cover different obligations.
The quoted scope ends at the agreed FOB delivery point. The buyer still needs to account for main freight and other applicable costs.
The seller's obligations include specified freight and insurance, but import clearance and many destination-side costs remain outside the quotation.
Bring both quotations to the same delivery and cost scope before deciding which offers better value.
| Cost item | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | Make, model, specification, year, mileage, condition and chassis details. |
| Purchase charges | Auction and service fees included or excluded. |
| Japan-side costs | Domestic transport, inspection, preparation and export handling. |
| Shipping | Named port, method, freight and loading charges. |
| Insurance | Whether included and what the cover actually provides. |
| Destination | Port handling, customs clearance, duties, taxes and registration. |
| Payment terms | Currency, exchange-rate basis, bank fees, validity and potential adjustments. |
A charge listed on a quotation is not necessarily included in the quoted total. Likewise, an omitted charge does not necessarily mean it will never be payable.
Work backwards from your total budget
If you already have a maximum budget, calculate what remains available for the vehicle after allowing for every other expected cost.
Include relevant Japan-side costs, freight, insurance, import charges, compliance, registration and delivery. Do not deduct an item twice if it is already included in another price.
This is a planning calculation, not a guaranteed bid limit. Where import taxes or service charges depend on vehicle value, recalculate the total using the proposed purchase price before bidding.
For dealers, the same principle applies to resale:
Maximum vehicle purchase price = Expected local selling price − Required margin − All other estimated purchasing, import and selling costs.
A low auction price is not automatically a profitable purchase. The vehicle needs to make financial sense after all relevant costs.
Is importing from Japan actually cheaper than buying locally?
It can be, but not in every market or for every car.
Compare vehicles with similar specifications, year, mileage, condition and intended use. Then compare the complete import and delivery cost with the price of a comparable car available locally.
Also consider parts availability, maintenance requirements, local compliance, delivery time and, for dealers, expected resale demand and holding costs.
The useful question is not whether the Japanese purchase price is lower. It is whether the imported car remains a better-value option once it is ready for use or resale.
What information is needed for a useful import cost estimate?
A meaningful quotation starts with a clearly defined vehicle and destination. Prepare the following details:
- Make, model and specification
- Preferred year range
- Mileage and condition requirements
- Purchase budget
- Number of vehicles
- Destination country and port
- Vehicle or auction details, if available
- Required quotation scope
Super5 Auto supports used car sourcing, Japanese auction purchases, export handling and international shipping. Providing a specific vehicle requirement and destination makes it possible to clarify the applicable Japan-side purchasing and transport arrangements.
Destination-country duties, permits, registration and local charges should also be checked against the current rules and the actual clearance arrangements in that market.
